Just The Blues Show
“Not Just The
Blues,” is designed to connect the African American
community with mental health education and resources
and to develop a support system to improve the quality
of life in the African American community, whether
the individuals are members or not. As an African
American psychologist and Board Certified Expert in
Traumatic Stress (B.C.E.T.S.), Dr. Denyse Hicks-Ray
envisions a society that will establish educational
and culturally sensitive programs for African Americans
with mental health disorders.
Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the world saw repetitive
images of what is now described as the worst traumatic
incident in American history. The emotional impact
of the historic event has left wounds and scars that
can’t be seen by the naked eye. The witnesses
and viewers, who can no longer board an airplane,
take an elevator past the 2nd and 3rd floors know
those scars. Those who were left abandoned by love
ones lost to the tragedy feel the emptiness. The images
will stop playing soon, but the scars on their souls
will be there forever.
They long for the comfort of things familiar. Direct
and indirect victims sickened by the images of buildings
exploding, sadden by the lives lost in the malay will
forever be reminded of this day. Terrified and fearful
that the safety of life as we had come to know it
would never be the same. Life will of course never
be the same.
The clinical definition of psychological trauma,
is, any traumatic experience that shake the foundations
of our beliefs about safety, and shatter our assumptions
of trust. Because these experiences are so far outside
what we would expect, these events provoke reactions
that feel strange and “crazy”. The most
helpful thing I can say here is that even though these
reactions are unusual and disturbing, they are typical
and expectable. By and large, these are normal responses
to abnormal events.
